placing boxes while travelling

I do a map recon of the area for cool spots. I personally prefer historic places and natural phenomenon, like waterfalls. I try to get good maps from the park or whatever before I go, too.
If that's not available, then when I get there I see if they have a map available, or do a good recon on foot, so that I can be the tour-guide for letterboxers in my clues. I try to answer the question
"Why would I go here even if there wasn't a letterbox?".

Also, I think of how I'm going to do maintenance on the boxes. Do I go this way each year? Do I know anyone in the area that I could ask to repair the box? A letterbox far away shouldn't be a 50 cents cheapo, since it will need more upkeep if the seal or the lid or the box breaks.
